Hackthorn Church Of England Primary School

A small school with a BIG heart.

PSHE

At Hackthorn CE Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is ambitious, well-sequenced and progressive, equipping our pupils with the skills they need to be happy, healthy and responsible members of society.

Our PSHE curriculum meets the aims of the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance including the non-statutory sex education. It is supported by Kapow Primary RSE and PSHE, a comprehensive scheme of work that enables us to deliver an ambitious PSHE curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. It covers key areas which will support children to make informed choices around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships and economic wellbeing. This is in line with our school vision which states that: ‘We grow responsible and compassionate learners who are inspired to make a positive different in the world.’

What is PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education)?

PSHE is a planned programme of learning though which children acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives both now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE develops the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

What is RSHE (Relationships Sex, Health Education)?

The DfE announced that RSHE was to be compulsory for primary aged children from September 2020. Sex education remains non-compulsory.

RSHE includes learning about the changing adolescent body to equip children to understand and cope with puberty. The National Curriculum for Science includes learning the correct names for the main external body parts, learning about the human body as it grows from birth to old age and reproduction (including puberty) in some plants and animals.

RSHE and Science are compulsory subjects and as such, parents/carers do not have the right to withdraw their children from these subjects.

The DfE guidance states sex education is not compulsory in primary schools. We will deliver additional content (in Year 6) on sex education to meet the needs of our pupils which includes ‘conception’ and ‘human reproduction’. We will inform parents/carers when these topics are being taught. Parents/carers have the right to request their child is withdrawn from these specific lessons.

Our Provision

The Kapow Primary scheme is a whole school approach that consists of three areas of learning in EYFS (to match the personal, social and emotional development prime area) and five areas of learning across Key Stages 1 and 2. These are:

EYFS:

  • Self-regulation
  • Building relationships
  • Managing self

KS1 and KS2:

  • Families and relationships
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Safety and the changing body
  • Citizenship
  • Economic wellbeing

Each area is revisited to allow children to build on prior learning. The lessons also provide a progressive programme.

The documents below give an idea of the weekly content of the PSHE curriculum throughout school. There may be some deviation/lessons omitted due to coverage being amalgamated within other lessons within the scheme of work.
