Design and Technology
At Hackthorn CE Primary School, Design and Technology (DT) is an exciting, hands-on subject that encourages creativity, problem-solving, and practical thinking. Through DT, children learn how to design, make, and evaluate purposeful products that solve real-life problems.
What is DT?
Design and Technology helps children:
- Explore how things are made and how they work
- Develop creative and technical skills
- Work through design processes – from ideas to finished products
- Use tools and materials safely and effectively
- Learn about healthy eating and basic cooking skills
Key Stage 1 (Ages 5–7)
Children will:
- Learn to design and make simple products (e.g. moving pictures, windmills)
- Use materials like paper, card, fabrics, and construction kits
- Explore basic mechanisms such as sliders, wheels, and levers
- Begin learning simple food preparation
Key Stage 2 (Ages 7–11)
Children will:
- Investigate how existing products work and are made
- Work on more complex projects using wood, textiles, and electronics
- Explore mechanical systems (e.g. gears, cams, pulleys)
- Learn basic cooking and nutrition
- Reflect on and improve their own designs
Cooking & Nutrition
As part of DT, all children learn about:
- The importance of a healthy diet
- How to prepare simple dishes safely and hygienically
- Where food comes from and how it’s produced
Why DT Matters
DT helps children become resourceful, innovative thinkers. It supports learning in other subjects like maths, science, and art – and builds skills that will help them throughout life.
